Data sources

Rate-API draws its exchange rates from published sources. The institutions below license their data for reuse on condition that they are credited, so each credit is given here in the wording its licence asks for.

How often rates change

We check our sources every hour. A rate changes when its publisher releases a new one: for most currencies that is once per business day (the European Central Bank publishes at about 16:00 CET), so a rate can stay the same overnight, at weekends and on holidays. Daily history goes back to 1999 for the ~30 currencies the ECB publishes, and is shorter for the rest.

Credits

Credit lines are given in the language and wording of each licence.

Free of charge
The ECB euro foreign exchange reference rates may be obtained free of charge from the European Central Bank at ecb.europa.eu.
What Rate-API changes
The ECB publishes rates against the euro. Rate-API rebases them to the US dollar and computes cross rates from them: those figures are Rate-API's calculation, a modification of the ECB data, not rates published by the ECB.
